The Amherst Community Solar Project New York State is looking to achieve 6 gigawatts (GW) of distributed solar by 2025, with 40% benefitting disadvantaged communities. Catalyze was selected to help realize its first community solar project in Amherst, a suburb of Buffalo, NY.

The 6.5-megawatt (MW) solar farm provides the entirety of its clean energy output to the Buffalo Municipal Housing Authority, which serves low-to-moderate income residential customers.

The project also utilizes sheep to maintain the vegetation on-site during the grazing season. Shepherded by a member of the Amherst community, the project is providing new opportunities and economic growth.

For the novel combination of sheep and agrivoltaics, Catalyze was awarded Top Project of the Year in the Environmental Impact category by the Environment+Energy (E+E) Leader Awards program.
